During a visit to Rome (in 2009) I saw that, in front of one of the twin churches on Piazza del Popolo, a group of young people were hanging out and having a good time.
From their clothing, accessories, make-up and hair-style it was obvious that these were not ordinary youngsters. When I introduced myself to some of them, I asked them if they were "Gothics". Soon I learned that for them Gothic was something from the past that had evolved into subcultures such as Metal, Vampire, Cyber, Lolita and others. But, they said, we prefer to be called "Dark" and our scene "Dark Underground".
Contrary to the somewhat uninviting way they may appear, I found these Darks to be very open-minded and kind people. It didn't take long until I started making photos of my new friends. Later that year I visited Rome once again.
In Holland I found out that there was a Dark Underground festival in the city of Utrecht every year, called Summer Darkness, so I continued my photo project there. The photos in this section are from these occasions in Rome and Utrecht.
